Who is Bjarne Olesen?
On a November day in 2010. I entered my manager's office, as always, with a thousand things in my head. "Bjarne," my boss opened directly, "how about getting a coach?"
I immediately understood what he was trying to tell me. Until then, my professional life had been straightforward. I was born in Denmark and grew up with a lot of hygge. Thirty years ago, after studying and gaining professional experience in the IT industry, I moved to Germany – first professionally, then because of love. I made a career at Lufthansa and rose to become a manager.
And yet I was standing here in my manager's office, with the burnout in my neck, and I knew it could not go on like this.
After the end of my active time with Lufthansa, I now have the freedom to use this potential even more and to work as an independent coach, manager and consultant. Always with me: a large portion of deliberateness and calmness. Typical Scandinavian or typical Bjarne? I leave that to your judgment.

I followed my boss's advice and started coaching. It helped me not only break my personal hamster wheel, but also to recognize my talent for Servant Leadership. Since then, leadership for me has meant making sure that my employees were able to change and develop.

I love to encourage and challenge people, and to see how they develop. The term "Servant Leadership" is essential for me. In a complex world and in agile organizations, in which the manager cannot be omniscient, it is often to some extent more profitable for the manager to accompany his employees as a coach. Especially the 1st line manager (team or group leader) is strongly challenged to support and coach her/his employees.
How does coaching and management fit together?
The disciplinary superior as coach - is that possible? Yes, I think it is possible when someone is stuck in a spiral of problems but still wants to achieve more. Are the resources available for this? Or are new perspectives required? Do you have a gap in your leadership team?
